Water is essential for everyone's survival. The sad part is that clean, safe water is not always available, which puts your health at risk if you consume such water. Note that the harmful elements in the water may not be visible to the naked eye. You are better off taking preventive measures by treating the water before using or consuming it. On the bright side, there several ways of dealing with impure water before it finds its way to your taps and storage vessels. In this piece, you will learn some of the innovative ways of treating your household water to keep everyone safe.

Filtration

Filtration is on one of the most useful ways of removing contaminants from water. Essentially, filtration refers to the physical separation of solid particles suspended in a medium. The tools and techniques used to carry out filtration depend on the amount of contaminants, the size of the particles and the ionic charge of the contaminants. Charged contaminants require you to bring in special filtration equipment with activated carbon to protect the membranes of the filters.

Simple filtration separates the solid contaminants from your water. It may not work for dissolved impurities, requiring you to resort to more sophisticated techniques if you want to get the water purified well.

Reverse Osmosis Method

Reverse osmosis is a unique filtration method that you can use to purify your water. In this technique, you reverse the normal flow of water in osmosis such that the water moves through a highly concentrated solution to a more dilute solution. The process happens over a semi-permeable membrane with additional pre- and post-filters assisting in cleaning the water thoroughly. Apart from removing fine particles from the water, reverse osmosis is also effective at getting rid of other contaminants such as protozoa, bacteria and giardia. It also removes chemical contaminants and toxic metal ions like radium and nitrates.

Ultraviolet Treatment Devices

Ultraviolet treatment systems combine well with pre-filtration to deliver clean water. Pre-filtering is necessary to remove any suspended solids before proceeding with the UV system treatment. Here, you use special devices to treat the water using ultraviolet radiation, which kills protozoa and bacteria like salmonella, among other unwanted impurities. Your best bet would be to finish off the process by adding softeners to the water. They neutralise chemical contaminants and make up for the UV light's inability to get rid of the harmful chemicals.
